Heritage Classical Academy is proud to use the Singapore approach to Math instruction. Upon introduction of a mathematical concept, the students are first supplied with concrete, hands-on manipulatives to grapple with the problem, and are encouraged to think flexibly and creatively, using a variety of solving strategies. As students become comfortable with the concept, pictorial representations are introduced. Students are challenged to represent their thinking using number bonds, bar models, and other visual representations.

 

Finally, our students progress to the abstract phase, in which each is prepared to solve the numerical equations themselves. This progression from concrete to pictorial to abstract is key to developing mathematical confidence and problem solving ability and, over time, molds students who complete Math with flexibility, expertise, and joy.
