5 Family Activities to Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15, honors Latinos who have greatly contributed, influenced, and enriched our culture and society. It is a great opportunity to teach children about the history and traditions of Latino culture.

In honor of this month, we are sharing some of our favorite ways to celebrate Latino culture with the entire family. Keep reading for our top 5 family activities for Hispanic Heritage Month.

1. Read a book. Reading is a powerful way to connect our children to the stories of others. This list from PBS of 11 inspiring children’s books celebrating Latino voices and culture are great options to weave into nightly bedtime stories.

2. Listen to music, and dance! Use your favorite music streaming service to search for children songs and playlists by Hispanic artists. Or search for a YouTube tutorial on traditional Latin dances, like the bachata, merengue, cha-cha, salsa, and samba.

3. Try a new recipe. Work together as a family to research, plan and prepare a new dish and learn about the area where it originated. Here are 25 flavorful recipes to get things started and bring everyone together in the kitchen and at the dinner table.

4. Create art. Encourage children’s creativity with these DIY art projects inspired by artistic traditions across Latin America.

5. Take a field trip. Houston has several landmarks where you can learn about and celebrate the contributions and achievements of Hispanic Americans on the Bayou City. As the weather cools down, round up the family and visit one of these historical locations.

No matter which activity you choose, spending time teaching the next generation about the traditions and various cultural aspects of Latino culture is one of the best ways to honor Hispanic Heritage Month.
